PRIMARY UNIT (GRADES K-2)
In the nurturing environment
of the Primary Unit, learning is a joyful, challenging, and rewarding
experience. Here students learn the fundamentals of reading, writing,
mathematics, and science and are immersed in a world of new ideas
and information.
Every effort is made to relate
new facts and concepts to the world that the children already know
and understand. A low teacher-student ratio facilitates instruction
geared toward individual learning styles. Students are encouraged
to use their developing knowledge and skills for critical thinking
and problem solving.
The Primary Unit curriculum
is experiential, interdisciplinary, and theme-based. Activities
relate to thematic units of study, such as Ancient Egypt,
Colonial Philadelphia, Flight, Japan, and Picasso. Science
units have included Astronomy, Insects, Water, Birds, Trees,
and Geology.
The Primary Unit program
includes "specials," classes taught

"My first experience with combinatorics
was working on problems with Cuisenaire rods in the Primary
