THANKSGIVING FEAST
November 22, 2007
Since its founding in 1972, The Philadelphia School has celebrated Thanksgiving with an All-School Feast on the day before the holiday. Last Monday and Tuesday, everyone at the school was busy preparing a meal for 371 students, 65 staff and faculty members, and assorted guests. Middle School students and their teachers spent Tuesday chopping garlic, onions, and fresh basil and oregano; stirring and simmering tomato sauce; and layering fresh lasagna sheets, sauce, ricotta, and mozzarella. Third, fourth, and fifth graders prepared brownies, under the guidance of their teachers, who include Anne Clark, one of the authors of the The Frog Commissary Cookbook. First and second graders baked cornbread, and the kindergarteners made butter – by jumping up and down while shaking baby jars filled with cream!
In addition to preparing a feast for their own partaking, the children made extra lasagnas, brownies, and cornbread for Trinity Winter Shelter and St. John’s Hospice.
