WHO WE ARE
The Philadelphia School is a coeducational, nonsectarian independent school
educating children from preschool through eighth grade.
Our
mission, as a progressive school and vibrant learning community,
is to educate the character and intellect of children. We
want our students
to become engaged citizens who are critical thinkers, creative problem
solvers, and lifelong learners.
Our interdisciplinary,
theme-based program
addresses how a child grows intellectually, creatively, emotionally,
socially, morally, and physically. Our extraordinary faculty's
respect for childhood and passion
for teaching and learning make the school a dynamic
community of learners. There are many opportunities for
active parent involvement.
Urban Curriculum
The Philadelphia School's location in Center
City means that many of the city's historical, educational,
and cultural resources are within easy reach. The city is
a major component of the school's curriculum--as a subject
of study, as an extension of the classroom, and as an inspiration
for civic pride and responsibility. Click

Shelly Ridge
Outdoor education has been integral
to our program since our founding in 1972. By beginning
their scientific careers by studying what
is familiar--animals, plants, soil, weather--children develop
the confidence to grapple with increasingly more abstract
concepts.
K-8 students spend a day each week in the fall and spring
at Shelly Ridge, a 125-acre nature center located in Upper
Roxborough and owned by the Girl Scouts of Eastern
Pennsylvania. Click
